Pukina was born in the northern Great Sandy Desert; his home country was to the north and east of Kunawarritji. When Pukina was a young man he travelled around with all his family, visiting the water sources, getting kangaroos, having a feed with all the family. He travelled from Palikaru to Yakurti Tarta soak, Nyukuwarta, Kurtikurti, Jintimirli, Minyarr Warlu, Janparra, Kumpurli, Matapurli, Marlu Kujarra, Warlyanarta, Mirrilariti, Jiturnga, Katapi and eventually to Kirriji. He said that things changed when the government came and picked him up in a motorcar and took him to Jigalong mission.
Pukina continued to live in Punmu community, but he painted country from far to the north, in the Kunawarritji area. His paintings featured Mulyakutu, Yunapayi, Kunkun, Mukulan, Pingkari, Ngurturti, Palkarlpa, Karrla, Lantilpayi, Turnpukurti, Wakarlpuka, Jintimilil, Kujaurlta, Wakurnpiri and other places besides.
