Opening Celebrations: Martu Mob at the Cultural Centre

To celebrate the opening of We don’t need a map – a Martu experience of the Western Desert, the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre will be celebrating with an all-day free event.

Join the exhibiting artists and the Co-Curators for an In Conversation Panel Discussion, basket weaving, and talks for an insight into the Martu way of life, the collaborative multi-media artworks, land management practices, bush tucker, animal tracking and the journey of creating We don’t need a map.

The Martu mob will be joining us for the opening day only, so don’t miss out!

Artist Talks | 12pm
Delve deeper into the artwork and join senior Martu painters from the Western Desert and other exhibiting artists such as Lynette Wallworth for talks about their artwork and some of the extraordinary knowledge embedded within these paintings.

Bush Tucker, Animal Tracking & Looking After Country | 2pm
The Martu rangers will share the management work they do to look after country and reveal how they track and hunt animals for bush tucker.

Basket Weaving | Afternoon
Get involved and join the female Martu artists as they demonstrate and teach coil basket weaving.

Kids Zone | Allday
Based upon a hand-made basket by Martu artist Thelma Judson, kids can explore a giant, inflatable structure throughout the day. Kids can also get creative with Martu inspired colouring-in projects.
